ISC WUR by subject 2022 Released

Islamic World Science and Technology Monitoring and Citation Institute (ISC) has released its World University Ranking by subject 2022 since its first release in 2019. In ISC WUR by subject, the hierarchical division scheme of The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is used.

In this scheme, all subject areas are observed in 6 main categories and 42 subcategories. The six main categories in this scheme include: Natural Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Medical and Health Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities. The position of Iranian universities according to these subject areas is as follows.

Natural Sciences

In ISC WUR by subject 2022, the presence of Iranian top universities in 6 out of 7 fields of natural sciences has been mentioned. These include Mathematics, Computer and information Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth and Related Environmental Sciences, and Biological Sciences among the top universities in the world.

In this field, Tehran University won the first rank (301-350), while Amirkabir University of Technology, Tarbiat Modares University and Tehran University of Medical Sciences (501-600) won the second rank.

Engineering and Technology

In Engineering and Technology, rankings have been made in 11 fields, and Iranian universities were present in all 11 subject areas. Tehran University ranked 1 (141), while Amir Kabir University of Technology and Sharif University of Technology ranked 2 (251-300).

Medical and Health Sciences

In Medical and Health Sciences, Tehran University of Medical Sciences ranked first (219), Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (301-350) ranked second, Iran University of Medical Sciences and Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (351-400) jointly ranked third.

Agricultural and veterinary sciences

In agricultural sciences, Tehran University (102) ranked first, Shiraz University (230) ranked second, and Tarbiat Modares University (238) ranked third.

Social Sciences

In social sciences, only Tehran University is present and it was ranked 401-450.

Humanities and Art

In humanities, Tehran University ranked 501-600 and there are no more universities ranked from Iran in this list.

Natural Sciences

In Mathematics, Amirkabir University of Technology (217) won the first place, Tehran University (351-401) ranked second, and Iran University of Science and Technology (401-450) won the third place.

In Computer and Information Science, University of Tehran (212) won the first place, Amirkabir University of Technology (301-350), won the second place, and Sharif University of Technology (351-400), won the third place.

 

In Physical Sciences, Isfahan University of Technology ranked 451-500 and won the first place, Sharif University of Technology and Tehran University ranked 501-600 jointly won the second place.

 

In Chemical Sciences, Tehran University ranked first (130), Tarbiat Modares University (301-350) ranked second, and Amirkabir University of Technology and Sharif University of Technology, Tehran Medical University of Sciences and Tabriz University (351-400) jointly ranked third.

 

In Earth and Environmental Sciences, Tehran University (126) won the first place, Tarbiat Modares University and Tabriz University (351-400) shared the second place, and Shiraz University (401-450) won the fourth place.

 

In Biological Sciences, Tehran University of Medical Sciences (401-450) ranked first and Tehran University (451-500) ranked second.

 

Engineering and Technology

 

In Civil Engineering, Tehran University ranked 54, Iran Science and Technology University ranked 119, Tabriz University ranked 154, Sharif Industrial University ranked 157, and Amirkabir University of Technology ranked 164.

In Electrical engineering, electronic engineering, and information engineering, Tehran University ranked first (236), while Amir Kabir University of Technology and Sharif University of Technology jointly ranked second (251-300).

In Mechanical Engineering, Tehran University (33), Babol Noshirvani University of Technology (68), Iran University of Science and Technology (70), Amirkabir University of Technology (78), Sharif University of Technology (89) took the first to fifth place in Iran.

In Chemical Engineering, Tehran University (78), Iran University of Science and Technology (169), Amirkabir University of Technology (183), Sharif University of Technology (206), and Tarbiat Modares University (227) won the first to fifth ranks in Iran.

In Material Engineering, Tehran University (150), Sharif University of Technology (238), and Amirkabir University of Technology (240) ranked first to third in Iran.

In Medical Engineering, Iran University of Medical Sciences (67), Tehran University of Medical Sciences (114), Tehran University (152), Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (213) and Amirkabir University of Technology (234) ranked first to fifth in Iran.

In Environmental Engineering, University of Tehran ranked first (53), Iran University of Science and Technology ranked second (241), Sharif University of Technology ranked third (248).

In Environmental Biotechnology Engineering, Tehran University of Medical Sciences (145), Tehran University (155), Tabriz University of Medical Sciences (219), Tarbiat Modares University (240), Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (300-251) ranked first to fifth, respectively.

In Nanotechnology Engineering, Tehran University (251-300) ranked first, Sharif University of Technology (301-350) ranked second, and Tehran Medical University of Sciences (351-400) ranked third.

In other Engineering and technologies (including: Multidisciplinary Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Production Engineering, Food Sciences and Technology, Instrumentation Engineering, Microscopy, Imaging Science and Technology, Spectroscopy) Tehran University (90), Tabriz University (227), Amirkabir University of Technology (301-350) ranked first to third.

In medical engineering, Iran Medical University of Sciences (67), Tehran Medical University of Sciences (114), Tehran University (152), Shahid Beheshti Medical University of Sciences (213) and Amirkabir University of Technology (234) ranked first to fifth.

Medical and Health Sciences

In Basic Medical, Tehran University of Medical Sciences (158), Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (233), Tabriz University of Medical Sciences (241), and Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (250) ranked first to fourth.

In Clinical Medicine, Tehran University of Medical Sciences (251-300), Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (400-351), Iran University of Medical Sciences (401-450) won first to third places.

 

In Health Sciences, Tehran University of Medical Sciences (169) won the first place, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (251-300) won the second place, and Iran University of Medical Sciences (301-350) won the third place.

In Medical Biotechnology, Tehran University of Medical Sciences (145) won the first place, Tabriz University of Medical Sciences (185) won the second place, and Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (216) won the third place.

 

Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences

 

In agriculture, forestry and fisheries, Tehran University (62), Tarbiat Modares University (159), Shiraz University (160), and Isfahan University of Technology (250) ranked first to fourth.

 

Tehran University ranked 119 in veterinary sciences, which is the only |Iranian University in this field.

In Agricultural Biotechnology, Tehran University (195) ranked first, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Shiraz University and Tarbiat Modares University (251-300) jointly won the second rank.

In other areas of Agricultural Sciences (including Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Economics and Policymaking, Food Sciences and Technology) Tehran University (89), Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (122), Tabriz University (152), Tehran University of Medical Sciences (161) and Tabriz University of Medical Sciences (183) ranked first to fifth.

Social Sciences

In Economics and Business, Tehran University (190) and Iran University of Science and Technology (501-600) are the only Iranian universities in the list.

In Medical Education, Tehran University of Medical Sciences (351-400) ranked first, and Iran University of Medical Sciences jointly with Isfahan University of Medical Sciences (451-500) ranked second, while they are the only Iranian universities in this list.

 

In Psychology and Cognitive Sciences, Tehran University of Medical Sciences (501-600) is the only university in the country in this field.

In Social and Economic Geography, only Tehran University ranked 301-350.

Islamic countries in ISC WUR 2022 by Subject

Due to the importance of the position of science and technology in all subject areas, the ten-year science and technology document of OIC member countries (2016-2026) was approved by the ministers of these countries in 2017. Based on a 10-year science, technology and innovation documents of OIC member countries (valid until 2026), the presence of at least 50 universities of Islamic countries among the top 500 universities of the world has been targeted.

It is mentioned in this document that "university education in member countries should go beyond the basic issues such as paying attention to increasing the student entrance to the universities, governing more faculty members and increasing publications." In fact, it is necessary to focus on producing an up-to-date knowledge, providing quality education, expanding international communication, and increasing social impact.

 

The ten-year science and technology document of the OIC member countries provides a mechanism that aims to create collective capability and capacity for the development of a wide range of issues, including water, food, agriculture, energy, basic and applied sciences, as well as strengthening international communication and interactions with the world's leading scientific institutions.

Among the subjects mentioned in this document are Mathematics and Physics, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemical Sciences and Other Related Subjects which have countless benefits for the entire society.

It has been recommended that these sciences should be promoted at the level of Islamic countries, and for this purpose, investment should be made in these areas in addition to education and research.

In Natural Sciences, there were 43 universities from Islamic countries, the largest number of which were Iran with 11 universities and Egypt with 7 universities. The best rank obtained in this field belonged to Saudi Arabia (145).

In Engineering and Technology, there were 57 universities from Islamic countries, the largest number owned by Iran with 16 universities, while Malaysia ranked next with 11 universities. The best rank obtained in this field belonged to Saudi Arabia (85).

In Medical and Health Sciences, there were 54 universities from Islamic countries, the largest number of which is Türkiye with 16 universities. After Türkiye, Iran with 12 universities and Egypt with 8 universities have had the largest number of universities in this subject area. In addition, the best rank obtained in this field gained by Iran (219).

In Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences, there were 85 universities from Islamic countries, the largest number of which were Türkiye and Iran with 18 and 17 universities. The best rank obtained by Saudi Arabia (38).

In Social Sciences, there were 22 universities from Islamic countries, the largest number of which were from Malaysia with 7 universities. Subsequently, the countries of Indonesia with 5 universities and Türkiye with 3 universities had the largest number of universities in this subject area. In addition, the best rank obtained by Saudi Arabia (238).

In Humanities and Arts, there were 10 universities from Islamic countries, the largest number of which were by Malaysia and Türkiye with 4 universities each. Iran and Lebanon were also present with 1 university each in this subject area. The best rank obtained in this area belonged to Malaysia (251-300).

ISC WUR 2022 by Subject Methodology

In ISC WUR 2022, the target universities in each subject area are the universities that are among the first 700 universities in the world in terms of the number of publications in that field, and in a three-year period, at least 150 documents published in any subject areas and indexed in InCites database.

The ISC WUR by subject includes 3 major criteria of Research, International Activity, and Innovation. Since its importance, the research criterion has got the most weight.
