ISC Ranking by Subject 2023 Released
There are 43 universities from the Islamic Republic of Iran in the ISC-2023 global subject ranking.
Dr S. A. Fazelzadeh, ISC president stated: ISC Institute, as the authority for national ranking of universities and research institutes, started ranking world universities in 2018 in addition to ranking domestic universities. ISC international rankings include rankings of world universities, universities of the Islamic world, rankings of universities in D8 member countries and subject rankings of world universities.
The first version of the subject ranking of world universities, named ISC World University Rankings by Subject, was published in 2019, and since that year, this ranking has been done for the fifth year in a row. The methodology and results of this ranking are given below.
ISC WUR by Subject 2023
ISC president said: In ISC WUR by subject 2023, the hierarchical classification scheme of the OECD has been used. In this plan, all subject areas are placed in 6 main categories and 42 subcategories. The 6 main categories in this plan are: natural sciences, engineering and technology, medicine and health, agricultural and veterinary sciences, social sciences, humanities and arts.
He continued: In ISC WUR by subject 2023, the target universities are those ones that are among the first 700 universities in the world in terms of the number of publications in that field and within a three-year period (2019-2021) published at least 150 documents in each subject area and registered in the InCites database.
Fazelzadeh pointed out: The universities that are announced in ISC WUR by subject 2023 in each subject area will be finally announced in a combined format, as well as based on the continent and country, etc. The subject ranking of ISC is based on 3 general criteria of research, international activity and innovation. Because of its importance, the research criterion has been given the most weight. Table 1 shows the ISC subject ranking criteria and indicators with assigned coefficients.

43 Iranian universities in ISC WUR by subject 2023
ISC president said: In ISC WUR by subject 2023, there are 43 universities from I.R of Iran that have been ranked in different subject areas. The presence of universities in ISC WUR by subject 2023 in different years is shown in Table 3.

Natural Sciences
Fazelzadeh said: In ISC WUR by subject 2023, the presence of the country's top universities in 6 out of 7 fields in natural sciences include: mathematics, computer and information sciences, physical sciences, chemical sciences, earth and environmental sciences, and biological sciences.
In this field, in 2023, Tehran University ranked first (301-350) and Amir Kabir University of Technology, Tarbiat Modares University and Tehran University of Medical Sciences ranked second (501-600).
Engineering and Technology
He added: In Engineering and Technology, ranking has been done in 11 fields, and Iranian universities were present in all 11 fields. Tehran University ranked first with a rank of 150 and Sharif University of Technology ranked second with a rank of 251-300 and Amirkabir University of Technology and Iran University of Science and Technology won the third place with 301-350 position.
Medical and Health Sciences
In Medical and Health Sciences, Tehran University of Medical Sciences won the first place with a rank of 251-300, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences got the second rank with a rank of 351-400, and Iran University of Medical Sciences got the third rank with a rank of 401-450.
Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences
In Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences, Tehran University ranked first (144), Tarbiat Modares University ranked second (301-350), and Isfahan University of Technology and Urmia University ranked third (401-450).
Social Sciences
In Social Sciences, only Tehran University is present and it ranked in range of 351-400.
Humanities and Arts
In Humanities, only Tehran University ranked in the range of 501-600 and there is no other university from Iran which ranked in this field.
