The ESI database is one of three citation-analysis products of ISI, subscribed to by Wageningen UR Library. ESI offers the possibility of putting the number of citations from articles into perspective, from the average number of citations from an article from a certain year on a certain discipline.
Regularly, (ESI) database publishes updates of the latest list of the world's top 1% of institutions that have received the most citations over the past 10 years. These universities and research centers in the world are in the top one percent in terms of the number of citations received. Citation in the world of science indicates the quality of scientific products. Therefore, the reason for the increase in the number of these centers is the increase in the quality of research in that country.
In 2015, a study of ESI database showed that 30 universities and research institutes from Iran were among the top one percent universities and research institutes in the world. In 2016, with the growth of the quality of scientific products in Iran, the number of universities and research institutes increased to 35, while the number of top one percent centers increased to 53 in February 2017.
To select the most effective universities, all universities and research institutes in the world are identified and sorted according to their effectiveness, and in the next step, the top one percent of those who have had the greatest impact are selected and introduced.
In its latest update made in December 2020, 74 universities and research institutes from Iran are among the top 1% of the world's top universities with the highest impact. Therefore, compared to the previous year, when there were 65 universities in the list, the number of universities and research centers among the top one percent has increased by 14 percent and compared to the year 1994 has increased by more than 147 percent.
