Increasing the presence of Iranian universities and research institutes among the top universities in the world, Part IV

The ESI database is one of three citation-analysis products of ISI, subscribed to by Wageningen UR Library. ESI offers the possibility of putting the number of citations from articles into perspective, from the average number of citations from an article from a certain year on a certain discipline.

Regularly, (ESI) database publishes updates of the latest list of the world's top 1% of institutions that have received the most citations over the past 10 years. These universities and research centers in the world are in the top one percent in terms of the number of citations received. Citation in the world of science indicates the quality of scientific products. Therefore, the reason for the increase in the number of these centers is the increase in the quality of research in that country.

Iran has about 1.1% of the world's top 1% of universities and research centers, which is the highest share among Islamic countries after Turkey. Turkey ranks 13th in the world with 111 universities and research centers, and Iran ranks 18th in the world. After Iran and among Islamic countries, Egypt ranks 33rd in the world with 26 universities and research institutes. Saudi Arabia with 38 universities is ranked 38th, Malaysia with 21 universities is ranked 41st, Pakistan with 19 universities is ranked 43rd, Tunisia with 16 universities is ranked 46th and Indonesia with 14 universities is ranked 48th in the world.

In terms of the number of universities and research institutes in Iran, engineering ranked 1st. There are 43 of them in this list, where 33 Iranian universities and research institutes in clinical medicine are among the top 1% of the world's most cited. In chemistry, 28 universities and research institutes are among the most effective in the world. After that, Iran has 14 universities and institutes in pharmacology and toxicology, materials sciences, agricultural sciences, each among the top 1%. planting and animal sciences, social sciences, general sciences, computer science, biology and biochemistry, environment and ecology are in the next ranks in terms of number. Iran has between 6 and 8 institutes and universities in these fields. Physics, geology, neuroscience, immunology, mathematics and microbiology are ranked next. The number of top Iranian institutions in these areas is 1 to 4.
